Death | 5 Oct 1864 | Joseph B. Baker died on 5 Oct 1864 at the "Battle of Altona Mountain", Barstow County, GA, at age 21. The Battle of Allatoona Pass, GA, is called "one of the most dramatic and tragic episodes of the Civil War." Confederate troops who could not have hoped to prevail against armed forts were sent against Union troops who could barely hope to hang on against superior numbers. Of the 5,301 men engaged in the battle (2,025 Union and 3,276 Confederates), there were 1,603 casualties. (Based on the ratio of men committed to battle to the casualties, Allatoona Pass was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War.) The battle was pivotal: Sherman's army was supplied by trains coming through the Pass and much-needed supplies intended for the Army in Atlanta were held there in stores. In the end, the Union troops held on, losing more than a third of their number, and the Confederates -- fearing that Sherman was marching to reinforce the forts -- withdrew northward.1 |
