ChartsDescendants of Thomas and Dorothy Davenport Baker
    Children of David Baker
    RelationshipGrandson of Thomas Baker.

Birth27 Dec 1788 James Crittenden Baker, son of David Baker and Mary Webb, was born on 27 Dec 1788 at Burke County, NC. Although Elma Baker's The Rugged Trail lists his first name as John, this son of David Baker was certainly named James, not John. He was named for his grandfather James Crittenden Webb.1
Name Variation  James Crittenden Baker was generally known as Crittenden.
1790 Census1790 Based on age and gender, James Crittenden Baker was probably included, as a free white male under age 16, in the household of his father, David Baker, on the 1790 Census of Burke County, NC.2
1800 Census1800 Based on age and gender, James Crittenden Baker was probably included as a free white male, under age 10, in the household of his father, David Baker, on the 1800 Census of Burke County, NC. In fact, Crittenden was around age 12 at the time of this census.3
    Note

The available records provide powerful circumstantial evidence that one James C. Baker, who died in TN on 9 Oct 1865, was in fact James Crittenden Baker, son of David.

First, DNA testing of a documented descendant of James C. Baker is a 36/37 marker match with known sons of David Baker (and the one marker that's different is one that the DNA testing company describes as a frequently mutating marker); thus, the DNA is a very strong match.

Second, James C. Baker listed his birthplace as NC and his age as 66 on the 1850 Polk County TN census, and his birthplace as NC and his age as 75 on the 1860 Polk County census. On his tombstone his birth year was shown as 1786. That establishes that he was born c1784-1786 and certainly before 1790. There were only three Baker sons in North Carolina who had young sons in the 1790 NC census (David, John and Henry; Charles had only one daughter and James was unmarried and childless in 1790) and neither John nor Henry had a known son named James born before 1790.

Third, the 1840 Sevier County TN census listed Crittenden Baker just above the family of a David Baker who appears very likely to be the same David Baker listed just beneath James C. Baker on the 1850 Polk County census. David B. Baker, known to be James' son, had one son born 1840 (the 1840 census shows a son under age 5); he himself was in his 20s in 1840 (the census shows a man age 20-30); the David shown in 1850 had two adult women living in his household, and the same is true of the David on the 1840 census. The likelihood then is that both Bakers moved together from Sevier County to Polk County between 1840 and 1850, a strong indicator of a close family relationship.

Fourth, at least one child of the David Baker shown on the 1850 census was buried in Prospect Cemetery, McMinn County TN. That is the cemetery where James C. and Nancy Baker were buried. The chances that David was not James' son are essentially nil.

Finally, David B. Baker was the oldest known son of James C. Baker. Under the naming patterns of the time (and a pattern commonly used in the Baker family), a first-born son was often named for the father's father.

This strong circumstantial case warrants treatment of the following record information of James Crittenden Baker and James C. Baker as records of a single individual.

Assuming that this is true, then Thomas Baker (living next to David B. Baker in Sweetwater, Monroe County TN, in 1860) is also likely to be a son of James Crittenden Baker and grandson of David Baker. Also in Sweetwater, Monroe County, in 1860 is a James C. Baker whose age and birthplace on the 1860 census makes him a candidate to be yet another son.

1810 Census1810 James Crittenden Baker was listed as head of a household on the 1810 Census of Burke County, NC. Enumerated next door on one side was Dorthy (Dolly) Barnett and on the other side was Lucinda Land, both identified by researchers as other Baker daughters.8
