RelationshipGreat-grandson of Thomas Baker.

Birth21 Nov 1820 William Baker, son of Martin Alexander Baker and Elizabeth Buchanan, was born on 21 Nov 1820 at NC. Note that William's date of birth is uncertain. William's descendants report that a family Bible gives it as November 21, 1820. Elma Baker in "The Rugged Trail" gives it as November 11, 1820. However, the 1850 census shows him as 28 and younger than Josiah, who was born in 1822.1,2
1830 Census1830 Based on age and gender, William Baker was probably included as a free white male, age 10-15, in the household of his father, Martin Alexander Baker, on the 1830 Census of Burke County, NC.3
1840 Census1840 Based on age and gender, William Baker was probably included as a free white male, age 15-20, in the household of his father, Martin Alexander Baker, on the 1840 Census of Cherokee County, NC.4
Marriage1843 William Baker married Matilda Gullet in 1843 at prob NC. Date of marriage extrapolated from ages of children and from her obituary.5,6
1850 Census17 Aug 1850 William Baker and Matilda Gullet Baker appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Division 2, Pulaski County, KY, enumerated 17 Aug 1850. William was shown as a 28-year-old farmer, born NC; Matilda was shown as age 27, born NC. Their children Julia E., Thomas Andrew, Louisa C., Lydia Dulcina and Josiah Leander were listed as living with them. All of the children -- Julia, age 6; Thomas, age 4; Louisa (shown as Eliza), age 3; Dulcina, age 2; and Leander, age six months -- were shown as born NC. Nearby in household 107 was William's brother Josiah and his family.7
1852 Iowa Census1 Jul 1852 William Baker was listed as head of a household on the 1852 State Census of Columbus City, Louisa County, IA. Based on gender, his household could have included his wife Matilda Gullet Baker, his sons Thomas Andrew and Josiah Leander and his daughters Julia E., Louisa C. and Lydia Dulcina.8
Deathbtw Jul 1852 - 1853 William Baker died btw Jul 1852 - 1853 at Columbus City, Louisa County, IA. According to an email from Bruce Baker, great grandson of William Baker, dated October 7, 2003, William and Matilda Baker traveled from North Carolina to Iowa in the fall of 1852. (Other members of the Baker family -- Martin and son David -- were already in Iowa by the summer of 1852.) Bruce Baker reports: "William made it to Iowa but died there shortly after his arrival. He and his family traveled in the fall of 1852, and they got as far as Burlington, Iowa and the weather got bad. They had to ford flooded streams and leading the oxen through the water got Great Great dad soaked. With that William caught a bad cold. He later developed pneumonia and died as a result of that. He was buried some where in the Columbus Jct area. But no one that we could find knew where. I did make contact by mail with a distant cousin that shared a letter that was written in June 1965. In it she recalled her mother telling about the trip. Her mother was my Aunt Julia, she married a William Marsden. Their family stayed in the Columbus City area. Her letter told the story of their travels and how hard it was for them." His widow's obituary puts William's death a year after their arrival in Iowa (or 1853).

William's widow, Matilda, remarried on October 8, 1854 and she and her Baker children were living with her second husband (William Paschal) in Louisa County Iowa on the 1856 census and the 1860 federal census.5,9,10

Birth20 Jul 1735 William Baker, son of Thomas Baker and Dorothy Davenport, was born on 20 Jul 1735 at prob Hanover County, VA.1
Marriagec 1758 William Baker married Ann Gambill, daughter of Henry Gambill and Mary Davenport, c 1758 at Culpeper County, VA.1
Note  Research into the descendants of William and Ann Gambill Baker is ongoing and has not been fully verified as yet. Nonetheless, DNA evidence as of 2007 certainly establishes that Adam Jackson Baker is in fact descended from Thomas (and Dorothy Davenport) Baker through one of their sons; the circumstantial evidence is also strong that William is the most likely candidate.
Death William Baker died. According to his sister-in-law Nancy Nall Gambill, William Baker was killed by Indians when his son Thomas Baker was very young.2
