Pearl Foster O'Donnell in Wee Bit o' Scot gives Martha "Patsy" Baker's date of birth as 1791 and explains away the fact that Charles is shown with two females on the 1790 census by concluding that the census must have been taken in 1791. More likely, she was born in 1790 and family records to the contrary are in error.1

    RelationshipGreat-granddaughter of Thomas Baker.

Birth9 May 1832 Martha Louisa Baker, daughter of Martin Alexander Baker and Elizabeth Buchanan, was born on 9 May 1832 at Burke or Macon County, NC. The date of birth is not clear on Louisa's application for a pension arising from her husband's Mexican War service. It could be the 6th, the 8th or the 9th. In addition, although Louisa identified her place of birth in that application as Cherokee County NC, that county was not formed by 1832 when she was born. It is thus not clear whether Louisa was born in Burke County (where the family was recorded two years earlier as of the 1830 census) or in the area of Macon County that became Cherokee County (where the family was as of the 1840 census).2,3
1840 Census1840 Based on age and gender, Martha Louisa Baker was probably included as a free white female, age 5-10, in the household of her father, Martin Alexander Baker, on the 1840 Census of Cherokee County, NC.4
1850 Census7 Sep 1850 Martha Louisa Baker appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Division 2, Pulaski County, KY, enumerated 7 Sep 1850, in the household of her parents, Martin Alexander Baker and Elizabeth Buchanan Baker. She was shown as "Margaret," age 18, born KY.5
Census1 Jul 1852 Martha Louisa Baker appeared on the census of 1 Jul 1852 at Columbus City, Louisa County, IA; in the household of her father, Martin Baker (showing one male and two females, the other female being Martin's wife and Louisa's mother Elizabeth Buchanan Baker).6
Marriage6 Dec 1854 She married George Washington Cottrell on 6 Dec 1854 at Long Creek, Parker County, TX. According to George and Louisa's Mexican War pension applications, the marriage itself took place on December 6, 1854 in Parker County, but was apparently recorded in Johnson County (since Parker County was not yet organized) the following month, on January 29, 1855. The book containing the marriage records from Johnson County for 1855-1865 was stolen sometime after the mid-1980s. However, two transcriptions of the original records had already been made and published. One was by Weldon Hudson, and was reprinted in 2002 by the Johnson County Historical Society. The other was by the former head of the Fort Worth Historical Society and was published in their magazine 'Footprints.' Based on the strength of those two transcriptions, a request was made for certification of the marriage record by Johnson County Clerk's Office; no response was received.3,7
1880 Census2 Jun 1880 Martha Louisa Baker Cottrell and George Washington Cottrell appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Parker County, TX, at Justice Precincts 6 & 8, enumerated 2 Jun 1880. The family last name was spelled "Cotrell." George was shown as a 59-year-old farmer, born KY; Louisa was shown as "Dottie L.", age 44, born KY. Their children Mary E., Margaret "Arby" and George W. were listed as living with them. The children were shown as Mary E., age 23, Margarett, age 16, and George W., age 12. Enumerated next door in household 9 were daughter and son-in-law Aaron and (Sarah) Jane Henson; nearby in household 12 were Louisa's brother Josiah and family including his mother-in-law Nancy Fore (mother of Nancy "Kate" Fore Baker and Mary "Polly" Fore Johnson, and grandmother of Mattie Johnson Cottrell), Josiah's son James and family in household 13, and Josiah and Louisa's uncle Charles in household 15.8
Residence21 Jun 1897  On 21 Jun 1897, Martha Louisa Baker lived at Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX. Louisa's pension application based on George's Mexican War service was filed from Iowa Park.3
1900 Census28 Jun 1900 She appeared on the 1900 census of Wichita County, TX, at Justice Precinct 6, enumerated 28 Jun 1900 in the household of John H. Green and Mary Cottrell Green, her daughter and son-in-law. She was shown as a 67-year-old widow, born NC May 1833.9
1910 Census30 Apr 1910 Martha Louisa Baker Cottrell appeared on the 1910 census of Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX, at Justice Precinct 2, enumerated 30 Apr 1910 in the household of John H. Green and Mary Cottrell Green, her daughter and son-in-law. She was shown as a 78-year-old widow, born NC.10
Death17 Jan 1913 Martha Louisa Baker Cottrell died on 17 Jan 1913 at Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX, at age 80. Her death notice appeared in the Wichita Falls Daily Times on January 24: "Mrs. Louisa Cottrell, 82 years old, died last Friday at 2:30 a.m., and was buried Saturday at 3 p.m. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. M.L. Blankenship assisted by Rev. H.B. Johnson. She leaves two sons and two daughters, nine grand children and five great grand children. She had been an invalid thirty years. She was a member of the Baptist church nearly sixty-eight years." Note that M.L. Blankenship was the pastor of the Baptist Church in Iowa Park and H. B. Johnson was the pastor of the Methodist Church in Iowa Park.11
Burial18 Jan 1913 She was buried on 18 Jan 1913 at Highland Cemetery, Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX.11

Birthc 1690 Mary (Corbie? Jacoby?) Baker was born c 1690. Mary Baker, wife of William, is often identified as Mary Corbie. There is no documentation for that name. Because of documented links of the Baker family with a neighboring Jacoby family, research is needed into the possibility that Mary was a Jacoby.
