Default Yancey County

John and I spent the past weekend in Burnsville. He had some business and I checked out the library. There is a little building across the street from the library that is called the Lloyd Bailey Annex. I went in, asked about Lloyd (no he wasn't there!) but met Elaine Dillinger the County Historian and spent two days in their private genealogy library looking up information on some of my other lines. My Bakers left the county in 1820's for Tennessee, so I knew there wouldn't be much on them there, but I found lots of other information on some of my other lines, Garland, McKinney, Oakes, Millers, Grindstaff, etc. Elaine also has a copy of the Bakersville Store Journal that she got about 5 years ago. We went over it trying to understand some of the abreviations. We decided "dto" and "dtr" means ditto debtor. Very nice lady even though she is not a Baker. she is a cousin however as we share an ancestor in Col Andrew Hampton of the Kings Mountain fame. Anyone want her email address, just let me know.

Pretty please! I may spend a couple of days down in that area in early June (I was planning on spending those days at the NC Archives, but they're closed! moving to new facilities and not reopening until July... darn it...)
